A domestic cat can run at a top speed of 30 mph, but not the average cat. Only Egyptian Maus and other lean, long-legged breeds can surge at that speed. The average domestic cat can charge at up to 20 mph. Faster than the average man, but not Usain Bolt. For a long-furred cat, the speed would be slower. Slow enough for the squirrel to escape.

Well now I know mine ain't the only one that does this crap lol . I have a blind set up out in the woods about 50 yards from my home with little solar lights hanging around in a few trees. I like to go out there at night and watch the fox and other wild life that comes through, deer, big ole opossum's and other lol. One night I was sitting out there and I had thrown some scrapes out and a couple of different fox was coming up snatching a bite here and there and one of my cats out of the 3 that was with me took off after one of the fox and ran it off. She's around 10. My little fat stubby black girl. I thought well she want be back. Here in just a few she came out of the woods like well dang I couldn't catch it. I think she was fascinated by it's big fluffy tail that was waving around. That's how I came across this video. I googled my cat chases fox lol

My cat is not good at hunting, I guess she never learned, she probably lived inside with the previous owner but she will just start running directly towards the squirrels but she is big and slow so she looks really pathetic trying but I guess she is having fun. My last cat was about 12 pounds and grew up as an outside cat. She would kill squirrels every once in a while for fun. She would also defend her territory against any other cats that came by

There is a stray cat in my neighborhood that chased down and killed a squirrel with ease. Then looked at me like "what?" and ran off with the squirrel in his mouth.

Watch the most heart-pounding part of the chase at 0.25 speed and you will see that each time the squirrel changes direction, it has to intentionally come closer to the cat in order to come closer to the tree. It can only do this safely because a cat takes longer to change direction than a squirrel, and during this time the cat cannot use its paws to slash at the squirrel. The squirrel's two advantages, I think, are that it is lighter than the cat and lower to the ground. A cat can almost certainly achieve a higher top speed in a straight line than a squirrel because a cat's legs are longer and the muscles of its hind legs are much stronger. But since the squirrel is lower to the ground, the squirrel can change direction more quickly. Since it weighs less it also has less work to do to change the direction of that weight. The squirrel thus does not need to scrabble so much to stop and reverse direction. This is no doubt a useful lesson for a light, short person trying to escape a heavier, taller person: bend your body forward to keep your mass low, and make many sudden sharp changes of direction. The taller, heavier person will skid more on every change of direction and hopefully fall over. If Peto was my cat, I would not let her, or him, go after a Fox, that's much bigger and hungrier than her. If you get a hungry mean Fox, you could just see it take off with Peto in its jaws. It be a shame to lose a beautiful brave cat like that. I do admire her bravery, and I'm sure she can handle herself, but foxes kill for a living out in the wild, so I personally would not take the chance. Rabies also.
